About St Michael & All Angels Church, Tōwai
The Church of St Michael and All Angels in Tōwai is a small Anglican church serving the rural community of Tōwai in the Hikurangi and Kawakawa area. Regular services are currently held on the third Sunday of each month (see our Sunday Services page).
The Church of St. Michael and All Angels was built in Tōwai in 1914. It was originally located at the top of the hill and was easily visible from the highway. The original site featured a ‘car park’ designed to hold a maximum of six horses. The church had perched on top of the hill in Tōwai for more than 100 years, but it had neither running water or electricity and the building had begun to deteriorate.
In 2009, the decision was made to move the church down the hill to a new site adjacent to the Agricultural Association hall on Tōwai Road off State Highway One.
The trust secretary, Vicki Dawson, states the fundraising leading up to the move was a true community effort as it took more than a year and about $25,000 to have the church relocated.

Once in its new site, the parishioners clubbed together to fully restore the building inside and out. Relocating the church made it more accessible for parishioners and enabled them to use the hall facilities next door, making it better suited for weddings, christenings and funerals.
